For what feels like an eternity, Arsenal fans have been clamoring for a top-tier striker to lead the line. The wait may finally be over, as the North London club is reportedly on the verge of completing a significant transfer for Sporting CP’s prolific goal-scorer, Viktor Gyökeres.
Gunners Near Agreement for Star Striker
According to reports from The Athletic, Arsenal and Sporting CP are nearing a full agreement for the transfer of the Swedish international. Personal terms have already been ironed out with Gyökeres, who is set to sign a five-year deal at the Emirates. The fee, agreed in principle, is for an initial €63.5 million plus a further €10 million in performance-related add-ons. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly pushing for a swift conclusion to the deal, aiming to integrate Gyökeres into the squad before pre-season training commences this July.

Why Gyökeres Over Other Targets
Arsenal’s pursuit of a new striker wasn’t limited to Gyökeres. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko was also a key target, but reports suggest that the German club’s refusal to lower their asking price ultimately led the Gunners to shift their focus.
This pivot opened the door for Gyökeres, a player who has long been admired by Arsenal’s new Sporting Director, Andrea Berta. Sporting CP initially signed the Sweden international from Championship side Coventry in 2023 for a modest €24 million. Since then, Gyökeres has exploded onto the scene, proving incredibly prolific in both of his seasons in Portugal. His market value has since soared to €75 million, and remarkably, no player across Europe’s top-10 leagues has scored more goals than Gyökeres since he joined Sporting.
The Premier League Question: Can Gyökeres Deliver?
The most pressing question for fans and pundits alike is whether the 27-year-old can replicate his astounding goal-scoring numbers from Liga Portugal in the highly competitive Premier League.
Since signing for Sporting, Gyökeres has bagged an impressive 68 goals in 66 games over the last two seasons, topping the charts across Europe’s top-10 leagues. For comparison, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane comes in closest with 62 goals.
However, these statistics alone don’t guarantee immediate success in England. The standard of Liga Portugal is undeniably different from the Premier League, and Gyökeres has never played a single game in any of Europe’s top-five leagues (Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1). It’s also worth noting that 17 of his 68 goals have come from penalties.
Arteta’s Transformative Touch
Despite these valid concerns, there’s a strong belief that Mikel Arteta’s tactical acumen could unlock Gyökeres’s full potential. Arteta has a proven track record of adapting players to new roles; last season, he successfully deployed midfielder Mikel Merino up front, a position he had never occupied before. Similarly, he has transformed Kai Havertz into a formidable attacking threat during his time at the Emirates. If Arteta can extract strong performances from less natural strikers, the feeling is that he could achieve wonders with a genuine goalscorer like Gyökeres.
Expert Insights: What Gyökeres Brings
Gonçalo Tristão Santos, Transfermarkt’s Area Manager in Portugal, offers valuable insight into Gyökeres’s key strengths:
“Gyökeres is a physically dominant striker with excellent movement, especially in transitions. His key strengths include his explosive acceleration, powerful ball carrying ability and his instinctive finishing inside the box. He’s deceptively quick for his size, often leaving defenders behind on counter-attacks, and he also excels at holding up the ball and linking play with teammates.”
While Arsenal typically dominates possession, potentially reducing counter-attacking opportunities, Gyökeres’s ability to hold up the ball and link play will be crucial for the Gunners’ attacking patterns.
Weaknesses and Promising Comparisons
Santos also highlighted areas for potential improvement: “In terms of weaknesses, his first touch under pressure can sometimes let him down and while he is a decent passer, that’s not exactly one of his best qualities.”
Despite these points, Santos believes Gyökeres is a truly exceptional talent: “He’s definitely one of the most complete and dominant strikers Liga Portugal has seen in recent years. Since arriving at Sporting, he has combined physicality, technical ability and a clinical edge in a way that’s rare in this league. I would place him in the top-tier alongside names like Mário Jardel or Radamel Falcao.”
Intriguingly, Santos draws a comparison to another impactful Swedish forward in the Premier League: “Alexander Isak. That ability to drift wide, attack space intelligently and finish with composure. He’s more aggressive and ‘raw’ than Isak, but they both offer mobility and unpredictability, especially when facing high lines.”
Can He Handle the Step Up?
Many of the tools needed to make a huge impact in the English top-flight appear to be present in Gyökeres’s game, but the key will be his ability to handle the significant step up in quality.
“I believe he has all the tools to succeed in the Premier League,” revealed Santos. “He has already shown he can handle physical leagues during his time in the Championship and he has grown even more at Sporting, both tactically and technically. The key will be how quickly he adapts to the faster pace and more sophisticated defenses in the Premier League. But with the right support around him, he could thrive, especially in a strong team like Arsenal.”
A Justifiable Investment?
“Assuming the fee will be around €70M, it’s a big investment,” Santos acknowledged. “However, considering today’s market, what Gyökeres brings, and what he did at Sporting, it’s justifiable. He could be a long-term solution for Arsenal’s no. 9 role, offering both goals and a relentless work ethic. If they can integrate him well, it could be very good value for the club.”
At 27 years old, the Swede will be expected to hit the ground running in North London. Arsenal needs immediate results, and they’ll be hoping that their new goal-machine Gyökeres can replicate his sensational form in Portugal in the English top-flight and help the club finally secure a major trophy once again.
